Biography of Linda Christian
Linda Christian, whose real name was Blanca Rosa Welter, was born in 1923 in Tampico, Tamaulipas, Mexico. She was the eldest of four children of Gerardus Jacob Welter, a Dutch engineer, and his wife, Blanca Rosa, a Mexican. Linda traveled extensively with her family during her childhood as her father worked in different places. She lived all over the world, including South America, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. This diverse upbringing had a positive impact on Linda's education, and she became fluent in Spanish, French, German, Dutch, English, Italian, Arabic, and Russian.
Acting Career
From a young age, Linda dreamed of becoming a doctor. However, after finishing high school, she changed her mind and pursued a career in film and stage. This decision was influenced by her encounter with her screen idol Errol Flynn, who gave her hope of meeting him in Hollywood. Determined to become an actress, Linda first appeared on Mexican screens under the name Linda Welter. She later moved to California, where she received a favorable offer from Louis B. Mayer, the head of MGM, during a fashion show in Beverly Hills. Her American debut under her new name, Linda Christian, was in the 1944 musical film "Up In Arms." She went on to star in films such as "Holiday In Mexico" (1946), "Green Dolphin Street" (1947), and many others.
Later Career and Personal Life
In 1954, Linda had a role in the first television adaptation of the famous Bond novel, "Casino Royale." She continued to act actively throughout the 1950s and 1960s, often in leading roles. Her filmography consists of around forty films, many of which were European productions. Linda's notable films include "Das große Wunschkonzert" (1960), "The Devil's Hand" (1962), "The V.I.P.s" (1963), "Il momento della verità" (1965), "Bel Ami 2000 oder Wie verführt man einen Playboy?" (1966), and more.
Aside from her acting career, Linda gained popularity due to the success of her daughter Romina Power, who formed the internationally famous duo "Al Bano & Romina Power" with her husband Al Bano. Linda had two daughters, Romina and Taryn Power, with her first husband, actor Tyrone Power, whom she married in 1949. They divorced in 1956, and Linda then began a relationship with the renowned racer Alfonso de Portago, who tragically died in an accident after just one year.
In the early 1960s, Linda's first husband, Tyrone Power, unexpectedly passed away from a heart attack at the age of 44. She later married British actor Edmund Purdom, but the marriage was short-lived. Linda's Hollywood career was not long-lasting, and by the mid-1960s, she appeared less frequently on screens. She eventually returned to Mexico and occasionally appeared in films. Her last role was in the 1988 telefilm "Cambiamento d'aria."
Later Life and Death
Linda Christian lived to the age of 87 and passed away from cancer on July 22, 2011.
