Linden Travers, whose real name was Florence Linden-Travers, was born in 1913 in Houghton-le-Spring, England. She was the older sister of the renowned British actor Bill Travers.
Early Career
Linden made her first appearance on screen in 1935 in the English drama "Children of the Fog." Prior to her film debut, she had already made her mark on the stage, playing a role in a production at the Newcastle Playhouse. In the same year, she made her West End stage debut in the play "Murder in Mayfair." During the 1930s, Linden appeared in several films, such as "Wednesday's Luck," "Brief Ecstasy," "The Last Adventurers," and "Almost a Honeymoon." However, her most notable work of the decade was in Alfred Hitchcock's detective comedy "The Lady Vanishes," where she played a pivotal role in the investigation of the mysterious disappearance of an elderly lady on a train.
Later Career and Personal Life
The late 1930s proved to be Linden's most productive period, as she appeared in four films in 1938 alone. In 1940, she once again garnered attention for her role in the acclaimed drama "The Stars Look Down," directed by Carol Reed. In 1941, she appeared in three films - "The Ghost Train," "South American George," where she played the lead character, and "The Seventh Survivor." One of her most significant roles came in 1948 when she starred in the British crime drama "No Orchids for Miss Blandish." After this project, Linden made a few more appearances on screen before her career came to an end.
In 1948, Linden married James Holman, and they had two children together. Sadly, their marriage was cut short by Holman's death in 1974. Linden's daughter from her first marriage, Susan Travers, who was born in 1939, followed in her mother's footsteps and became an actress. Linden also became an aunt to actors Richard Morant and Penelope Wilton. Throughout her career, Linden Travers appeared in around 27 films. Her last public appearance was in 1999 when she participated in the documentary television project "Reputations: Alfred Hitchcock," which explored Hitchcock's creative genius.
Linden Travers lived until the age of 88 and passed away on October 23, 2001.
