Biography of Lynn Berggren

Former Member of Ace of Base

Lynn Berggren was a former member of the group Ace of Base, in which she participated from 1990 to 2007 alongside her brother Jonas Berggren, her sister Jenny Berggren, and their mutual friend Ulf Ekberg. Prior to becoming a singer, Lynn studied to become a teacher at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg and sang in a church choir. She is fluent in several languages, including Swedish, English, German, Spanish, Russian, and French. When Ace of Base signed a contract with the Danish label Mega Records in 1990, Lynn put her teaching career on hold. While her sister Jenny expressed to the press that she "always wanted to be a singer," Lynn preferred not to make such statements. In fact, in 1997, she stated, "I would like to sing, but I never wanted to be a singer."

Mysterious Presence in Ace of Base

From 1997 onwards, Lynn Berggren appeared in the group's concerts, often standing in poorly lit areas or hiding behind objects on stage, such as curtains. In the group's music videos, she stood apart from the other members, and her face was blurred. Throughout the year, Lynn did not give any interviews. Other group members reluctantly explained what had happened to the lead vocalist. Managers, producers, and record company executives offered various explanations for Lynn Berggren's behavior. In 1997, when Lynn declined to participate in the World Music Awards ceremony, Clas Cornelius from the Danish record company explained her absence by saying that she did not like wearing makeup for stage performances. In one of her last interviews in 1997, Lynn stated that she simply wanted to stay in the shadows. The following eight music videos fulfilled her wish, as Lynn was absent from them. On other promotional materials, her face appeared sad and blurred. The cover of the album "Flowers" was further confirmation of this. In 1998, during the filming of the music video for the song "Cruel Summer" in Rome, Lynn did not want to be in front of the camera. Director Nigel Dick later revealed that if it weren't for his insistence, Lynn would not have appeared in the video. Jenny Berggren had to sing both her own and Lynn's parts in the music video. A year later, the magazine "Bravo" claimed that Lynn Berggren was seriously ill, based on the group's performance in Germany. To support their claims, the magazine published photos of Lynn. Ulf Ekberg once stated that Lynn had a fear of cameras, but other sources claimed that she simply had a fear of flying on airplanes, which explained her absence from some of the group's concerts. Lynn only appeared at concerts in Gothenburg and Copenhagen, as she did not have to fly to these cities. Group members said that Lynn was always shy and modest, and she would be happy if Jenny took over the group's leadership. However, an incident in 1994, when a fan attacked Jenny and their mother with a knife, also made Lynn reluctant to appear in public places. The attacker turned out to be a German fan, who was later arrested. She claimed to the police that her attack was meant for Lynn.

Personal Life and Departure from Ace of Base

Details of Lynn's personal life are unknown, while other group members have been open about their relationships. Jonas Berggren is married and has two children. Jenny Berggren is also married and has two children. Ulf Ekberg has a long-standing relationship with Joanne Ibar, and they have two sons. Lynn Berggren wrote several songs for Ace of Base, some of which were never performed in public. In the mid-1990s, she wrote and produced a couple of songs, including "Just 'N' Image," "Whispers in Blindness," and "Strange Ways," which were included in the album "The Bridge." Some fans associate Lynn's strange behavior with the lyrics of the song "Strange Ways."

In the spring of 2005, Jenny Berggren gave an interview stating that Lynn was still hiding from the public and refusing to give interviews to any media outlets. The last time Lynn performed in front of the public was in 2002 on German television, where she stood behind the group and played the synthesizer. A fan managed to take a photo of Lynn behind the stage, smiling. In October and November 2005, the group performed in Belgium as a trio, as Lynn was unable to attend the performances.

Two years later, the group officially announced her departure. According to an interview given by Ulf Ekberg on June 20, 2006, Lynn Berggren returned to university, but despite this, she would participate in the recording of the new album. However, in another interview on November 30, 2007, Ulf Ekberg announced that Lynn Berggren had definitively left the group and would not participate in the recording of the new album. The group had already been performing without Lynn as a trio for some time. Photos of Lynn Berggren were removed from all promotional materials on the group's official website, and Jenny, the true frontwoman, confirmed her sister's departure in the Danish press, stating, "She has not been a part of Ace of Base for several years."
