Lisa Raitt: A Canadian Political Trailblazer

Early Life and Career

Lisa Raitt was born in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada. She earned a Bachelor of Science from St. Francis Xavier University and a Master's degree in Chemistry from the University of Guelph.

Entry into Politics

Raitt first entered the political arena in the 2008 federal election, where she was elected to the House of Commons as a member of the Conservative Party. She was subsequently sworn into Prime Minister Stephen Harper's cabinet as Minister of Natural Resources.

Cabinet Experience

During her tenure as a cabinet minister, Raitt held various portfolios, including Minister of Labour (2010-2013) and Minister of Transport (2013-2015). She was one of only 11 women to serve in Harper's cabinet.

Leadership Bid and Vice Leadership

In 2016, Raitt announced her candidacy for the leadership of the Conservative Party but ultimately lost to Andrew Scheer. After Scheer's victory, he appointed Raitt as Deputy Leader of the Conservative Party and the Official Opposition in 2017, making her the first woman to hold that position in the party's history.

Post-Leadership

In the 2019 federal election, Raitt sought re-election but was defeated by Adam van Koeverden of the Liberal Party of Canada. She has since remained active in politics and public discourse.
