Liya Kebede was born on January 3, 1978, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She started her modeling career in her home country and quickly gained success. However, she noticed that the modeling industry in Ethiopia was significantly different from the European runways where she now regularly walks. In Ethiopia, for example, she had to personally provide her own shoes for every show.

After completing her education, she moved to France to continue working with a local agency.
