Biography of Valentyn Symonenko

Valentyn Konstantinovich Symonenko, the Chairman of the Accounting Chamber of Ukraine since 1996, was born on July 4, 1940, in a working-class family in Odessa. He graduated from the Odessa Institute of Engineering and Construction in 1962 as a civil engineer.

Economic Expert and Academic Achievements

Symonenko obtained his Candidate of Sciences degree in 1992 with a dissertation on "Improvement of Organizational and Economic Management of a Large City." He later went on to earn his Doctor of Sciences degree in 1996 with a dissertation on "Improvement of Management of Socio-Economic Processes in the Regions." These academic achievements solidified his position as a prominent economist in Ukraine.

He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the Academy of Economic Sciences. In 2003, Symonenko was awarded the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology for his series of works on regional and socio-economic policy. He is also an honorary member of the International Academy of Personnel.

Public Service and Political Career

Symonenko's career began as a construction worker at the Kyiv Hydroelectric Power Station. He then progressed from being an engineer to becoming the director of a concrete plant in the Odessa Concrete Trust. In 1983, he became the chairman of the executive committee of the Odessa City Council and a member of parliament. In 1991, he was appointed as the head of the city council and city executive committee.

In March 1992, Symonenko was appointed as the President's representative in the Odessa region and, in July of the same year, became the First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine. During this time, he also chaired the Social and Economic Council under the President of Ukraine and served as an advisor on socio-economic issues.

Symonenko was a deputy of the Ukrainian SSR and later a member of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine for two terms.

Chairman of the Accounting Chamber

In late 1996, Symonenko was elected as the Chairman of the Accounting Chamber of Ukraine by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. He was reappointed to the position for a second term on December 11, 2003. Throughout his tenure, he has received numerous awards and honors, including the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, the Order of Friendship of Peoples, and several honorary titles.

Mountaineering and Sports Achievements

Aside from his professional accomplishments, Symonenko has a passion for mountaineering. He is a Master of Sports, an honored coach of Ukraine, and a multiple champion of Ukraine and the USSR. He served as the President of the Ukrainian Mountaineering and Climbing Federation. Symonenko led the First Ukrainian National Expedition to Everest in 1999 and the National Expedition "Ukraine-Himalayas-2001."

For the past 25 years, he has been the leader of the "Odessa" mountaineering club. Symonenko's dedication and achievements in this field have earned him respect and recognition.
