Biography of Lobsang Rampa

Cyril Henry Hoskin, better known as Tuesday Lobsang Rampa, was a writer and mystic. He was born on April 8, 1910, and passed away on January 25, 1981. Rampa is best known for his esoteric works, particularly his famous book 'The Third Eye'.

The Third Eye

'The Third Eye' was published in the United Kingdom in November 1956. In this book, Rampa shared the story of his life in a Tibetan monastery. He described in detail the procedure of opening the third eye, which he personally experienced through a special hole made in his forehead. The book also recounted his encounters with real Yetis and the discovery of a mummy from his past lives.

Publication Controversy

The manuscript of 'The Third Eye' faced challenges in finding a publisher. Eventually, 'Secker and Warburg' agreed to publish the book. Fredric Warburg, one of the publishers, had the opportunity to meet Lobsang Rampa when he was known as 'Dr. Carl Kuon Suo'. While Warburg was initially skeptical, he shared the manuscript with several scientists, some of whom doubted its authenticity. However, the book was eventually published and received positive reception from readers.

Unmasking Lobsang Rampa

One skeptical scientist decided to investigate the origins of the book and hired a private detective. The detective uncovered the truth about Lobsang Rampa. Contrary to his claims, Rampa was not a Tibetan sage but a native of Plympton, Devon, in England. His real name was Cyril Henry Hoskin. It was only in 1948 that Hoskin officially changed his name to 'Carl Kuon Suo' and later adopted the pseudonym Lobsang Rampa.

Fraud Accusations and Move to Ireland

British journalists tracked down Lobsang Rampa in Ireland and accused him of fraud. Rampa admitted that he was born as Cyril Hoskin but claimed that his body was now inhabited by the spirit of the real Lobsang Rampa. According to Rampa, Hoskin willingly offered his body to him, as his own life was unremarkable, while Rampa had worn out his previous body and required a new one. Throughout his life, Rampa-Hoskin maintained that 'The Third Eye' was entirely based on his real experiences.

Support for Tibet and Later Life

Lobsang Rampa actively supported Tibet, although the Dalai Lama officially deemed Rampa's works as fiction but beneficial from a publicity standpoint. In addition to 'The Third Eye', Rampa wrote another 18 books, which were unusual compilations of religious and occult materials. Rumors surrounded these books, such as one volume being dictated by his Siamese cat.

In an attempt to escape the ongoing accusations of fraud, Rampa decided to relocate to Canada and even obtained Canadian citizenship. His wife, San Ra'ab, also became a Canadian citizen. They lived together with Sheelagh Rouse, Rampa's secretary and adoptive daughter.

Passing

Lobsang Rampa passed away at the age of 70 in Calgary, Canada.
