Early Life and CareerLoïc Leferme was a French freediver who achieved remarkable success in the sport. He was born on July 29, 1972, in Arcachon, France. Leferme's passion for freediving began at a young age, and he quickly demonstrated exceptional abilities in the discipline.
World Record Achievements
In 1999, Leferme set his first world record by diving to a depth of 137 meters. This was followed by a series of record-breaking dives, including a 162-meter immersion in 2002. On October 30, 2004, he further extended his world record to 171 meters in the "no limits" category. Leferme's world record in this category stood for over a year, until it was broken by Herbert Nitsch in October 2005.
Foundation of AIDA International
Beyond his own achievements, Leferme also made significant contributions to the sport of freediving. In 1990, he co-founded AIDA International with Roland Specker and Claude Chapuis. This organization serves as the governing body for freediving worldwide, promoting safety standards and organizing competitions.
Tragic Demise
While preparing for a new world record attempt in July 2007, Leferme tragically lost his life during a training dive in Villefranche-sur-Mer Bay. He had descended to a depth of 171 meters but was unable to surface due to an issue with his lifting system. It is believed that a rope or weight became entangled, preventing his ascent.
