A British Girl with a Rare Limb Disorder
Zara Zulfiqar, a young British girl from East London, was born with a rare and severe limb disorder called proximal focal femoral deficiency (PFFD). This condition left her right leg significantly shorter than her left, with a 15 cm discrepancy in length.
Early Diagnosis and Treatment
As Zara grew, the difference in leg length became more pronounced. At the age of eight months, she was diagnosed with PFFD, after doctors initially mistook her condition for a dislocation. Doctors advised that Zara's leg would likely fracture as she grew and recommended amputation.
Seeking Alternative Options
Zara's mother, Rehana Kadir, refused to accept the recommendation of amputation. She sought out alternative treatments and consulted with Dr. Dror Paley, a renowned limb lengthening surgeon in Florida.
Limb Lengthening Surgery
Dr. Paley proposed a surgery to lengthen Zara's leg by splitting her tibia and inserting metal pins to gradually increase the distance between the bone fragments. This procedure would involve gradual stretching of the leg, muscle and skin growth, and the correction of Zara's hip, ankles, and feet.
Fundraising for Treatment
Zara's parents launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise approximately £150,000 to cover the cost of the surgery and three months of recovery in the United States. They sought financial support from the public to give Zara the opportunity to live a normal life.
Hope for the Future
With the support of the GoFundMe campaign and the expertise of Dr. Paley, Zara's family remains hopeful that the limb lengthening surgery will be successful. They believe that this procedure will not only restore Zara's mobility but also improve her confidence and well-being.
