London Breed: Mayor of San Francisco
Early Life and EducationBorn and raised in San Francisco, London Breed was faced with adversity early on. Hailing from an underprivileged background, her sister tragically succumbed to a drug overdose in 2006, while her brother was incarcerated at the time of her mayoral election.
Despite these challenges, Breed excelled academically. She graduated from Galileo High School with honors and went on to earn a Bachelor's degree in Political Science from the University of California, Davis in 1997. In 2012, she obtained a Master's degree in Public Administration from the University of San Francisco.
Political Career
Breed's political journey began in 1999 as an intern in Mayor Willie Brown's administration. In 2002, Brown appointed her as Executive Director of the African American Art & Culture Complex.
She subsequently served as a commissioner on the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency for five years. In 2010, Mayor Gavin Newsom appointed her to the Fire Commission.
In 2012, Breed was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, representing District 5. In 2015, she was chosen as President of the Board.
Mayoral Tenure
Following the untimely passing of Mayor Ed Lee due to a heart attack on December 12, 2017, Breed became Acting Mayor. However, she was replaced by Mark Farrell as Acting Mayor on January 23, 2018, due to her candidacy for the mayoral election.
Breed emerged victorious in the special mayoral election held on June 5, 2018. On July 11, she was officially sworn in as San Francisco's 45th Mayor, making history as the city's first African American female Mayor.
Legacy
As Mayor, Breed has focused on addressing critical issues facing San Francisco. These include affordable housing, homelessness, public safety, and economic inequality. Her leadership has been recognized nationally and internationally, and she has been hailed as a rising star in the Democratic Party.
