Vojislav Mihajlović: A Politician of Serbia
Early Life and Political BeginningsVojislav Mihajlović was born in Belgrade, Serbia, in September 1951. He was a modest lawyer until being thrust into the political spotlight by Vuk Drašković, the leader of the Serbian Renewal Movement (SPO). Mihajlović's grandfather was Draža Mihajlović, a commander of Chetnik forces during World War II, who fought against both the Nazis and Tito's partisans. After the war, Draža Mihajlović was executed, and the ruling regime branded the Chetniks as traitors. The SPO, however, advocated for their rehabilitation.
Rise to Prominence
In 1993 and 1997, Mihajlović served as deputy speaker of the Serbian parliament for the SPO. On January 22, 1999, he was elected mayor of Belgrade. This position had been vacant for several years after Drašković, with the support of radicals, had ousted Zoran Đinđić, the leader of the Democratic Party.
Presidency Candidacy
Mihajlović's SPO nominated him as a candidate for the presidential elections of Yugoslavia scheduled for September 24, 1999. However, he was not the only opposition candidate, and the opposition was divided, giving Slobodan Milošević the opportunity to retain his position as head of state.
