Lorenzo Buffon - Italian Footballer and Goalkeeper
Lorenzo Buffon is an Italian footballer who is widely regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers of his time. He was born on October 30, 1937, in Italy. Lorenzo began his football career playing for the youth team of Serie D club "Portogruaro". He quickly made his way up to the Serie A, joining AC Milan, where he became the team's main goalkeeper and won his first Scudetto.
Success with AC Milan
During his time with AC Milan in the 1950s, Buffon formed a formidable trio with the attacking players Gre-No-Li. Together, they achieved great success, winning the Scudetto in the 1954-55, 1956-57, and 1958-59 seasons. However, in his later years with the club, Buffon faced irregular playing time, sharing the goalkeeping position with Narciso Soldano.
National Team and Move to Genoa
In 1958, Buffon received a call-up to the Italian national team, making his debut in a match against the French national team led by the top scorer of the World Cup, Just Fontaine. The match ended in a 2-2 draw. In 1959, Buffon moved to Genoa but only stayed there for one season before returning to Milan, where he remained for three more years.
Career Decline and Retirement
After the 1962 Chile World Cup, Buffon experienced a sharp decline in his career. He lost his place in the national team and moved to Fiorentina as a backup goalkeeper. He only played one game in the championship before his retirement. Buffon spent his final years in professional football playing for Serie D club "Martina" after a season with "Ivrea" in Serie C. Throughout his time in Serie A, Buffon played a total of 376 matches and represented the Italian national team in 16 games.
Legacy and Family Connection
Lorenzo Buffon is well-remembered in sports history for his famous rivalry with goalkeeper Giorgio Ghezzi, who also played for AC Milan and other teams. Lorenzo is also a distant relative of Gianluigi Buffon, one of the best goalkeepers of the modern era. He is Gianluigi's second cousin, once removed.
Current Life
Lorenzo Buffon currently resides in Latizane, where he works as a scout for AC Milan in the region.
