Early Life and Education

Loretta Lynch was born on May 21, 1959, in Greensboro, North Carolina. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree in English and American Literature from Harvard College in 1981. In 1984, she earned her Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School. Notably, she received an honorary degree from Duke University in 2017.

Legal Career

Lynch's legal career began with her nomination by President Bill Clinton as the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York in 1999. She temporarily stepped down from this position in 2001 but was reappointed by President Barack Obama in January 2010. During the period 2003-2005, she served as a member of the board of directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

Attorney General of the United States

On November 8, 2014, President Obama nominated Lynch to be the United States Attorney General. She assumed office on February 26, 2015, making history as the first African-American woman to hold this prestigious position. Lynch served as Attorney General until 2017, during which time she oversaw the implementation of various justice reform initiatives.
