Biography of Lotay Tshering

Early Life and Education

Lotay Tshering was born on May 10, 1969, in Dalakha, Thimphu, Bhutan, to a modest family. He attended Punakha High School and Sherubtse College, before pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Medicine at the Mymensingh Medical College, Dhaka University, Bangladesh, graduating in 2001.

In 2007, he studied urology at the Medical College of Wisconsin in the United States through a World Health Organization fellowship. Upon his return to Bhutan, he became the country's only practicing urologist. In 2010, he underwent additional training in endourology at Singapore General Hospital and Okayama University in Japan. In 2014, he earned an MBA from the University of Canberra in Australia.

Personal Life

Lotay Tshering is married with one daughter. While working at Mongar Hospital, he adopted a baby girl and a baby boy.

Medical Career

Tshering worked as a surgeon at Thimphu National Hospital and Mongar Regional Hospital and served as a consultant urologist at Thimphu National Hospital for 11 years. He paid approximately 6.2 million ngultrum to the Royal Civil Service Commission to engage in politics and ceased his medical practice.

Political Career

In 2013, Tshering contested the Bhutanese National Assembly Elections but his party failed to secure a seat. On May 14, 2018, he was elected President of the Bhutan United Party (BUP), just five months before the parliamentary elections.

In 2018, he contested and won the Bhutanese National Assembly Elections as a BUP candidate from the South Thimphu constituency, garnering 3,662 votes. His party secured the highest number of seats in the National Assembly, making him the country's Prime Minister.

Prime Ministership

On November 7, 2018, Tshering succeeded Tshering Tobgay as Prime Minister and was sworn in as Bhutan's third democratically elected Prime Minister. On December 27, 2018, he embarked on a three-day visit to India, his first foreign trip after taking office. On November 3, 2018, Tshering announced his Cabinet appointments.

- 1991: Fr. William Mackay Gold Medal for academic excellence at Sherubtse

- 2005: "Unsung Hero of Compassion" award from the 14th Dalai Lama

- 2017: Druk Thuksey Medal from King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck for "selfless and dedicated service to our King, our country and our people"
