Aníbal António Cavaco Silva, born on July 15, 1939, is a Portuguese politician who served as the President of the Portuguese Republic from March 9, 2006. He is widely recognized for his extensive background in economics and his contributions to academia.

Early Life and Education

Aníbal Cavaco Silva was raised in a small rural town in the southern province of Algarve, Portugal. He graduated from the Technical University of Lisbon and later pursued further studies in economics through an internship at the University of York in England.

Academic and Professional Career

After completing his studies, Cavaco Silva embarked on a long and successful career in academia. He taught economics at various Portuguese universities and eventually earned a doctorate in economics. He also became a professor in the field and later served as the director of the Research and Statistics Department at the Bank of Portugal.

Political Career

Cavaco Silva entered politics following the victory of the April Revolution in 1974. He joined the People's Democratic Party, which was later renamed the Social Democratic Party (SDP). He was elected to Parliament multiple times and in 1985, he became the leader of the SDP.

Throughout his political career, Cavaco Silva held several important positions, including Minister of Finance and Planning, Chairman of the National Planning Council, and Prime Minister of Portugal from 1985 to 1995.

Despite his previous political successes, Cavaco Silva faced defeat in the 1996 presidential elections. However, after a lengthy hiatus from politics, he once again presented his candidacy for the presidency and emerged victorious in 2006.
