Early Life and Ordination
Born into a modest family in France, the future constitutional bishop began his ecclesiastical career as a priest at a young age. He embraced the ideals of the French Revolution, which sought to reform the Catholic Church in France and establish a new civil constitution for the clergy.
Constitutional Bishop
Following the passing of the Civil Constitution of the Clergy in 1790, the young priest embraced the new regulations. He was elected as the constitutional bishop of a diocese, becoming one of the first to accept this controversial role. However, his tenure as bishop was short-lived.
Resignation and Political Career
Disillusioned by the increasing radicalization of the Revolution, the constitutional bishop resigned from his position in 1791. He subsequently embarked on a political career, winning election to the National Convention from the department of Meurthe.
The King's Trial
During the infamous trial of King Louis XVI in 1793, the former constitutional bishop played a significant role. He cast his vote in favor of banishment for the monarch, marking a decisive moment in the fate of the French monarchy.
