The Reverend Dr. Thomas Frame, Anglican Bishop

Early Life and Education

Thomas Frame, born in 1962 in Sydney, Australia, was raised in Wollongong by his adoptive parents. In 1979, he joined the Royal Australian Naval College as a 16-year-old cadet. After completing his training, Frame served as a junior officer on HMAS "Derwent" and later pursued a Bachelor of Arts in Asian History at the University of New South Wales, graduating with honors in 1984.

Naval Career and Doctoral Research

Frame worked on research projects at the Australian War Memorial and served on HMAS "Jervis Bay" and "Supply." He became an instructor at HMAS "Cerberus" while pursuing a Diploma of Education from the University of Melbourne. In 1988, he was appointed Research Officer at the Royal Australian Navy's Headquarters in Canberra. In 1991, Frame obtained a PhD from the Australian Defence Force Academy with a dissertation on the naval collision between HMAS "Melbourne" and HMAS "Voyager."

Ordination to the Priesthood

After retiring from the Navy in 1992, Frame studied theology and was ordained in 1993. He served as Vicar at St John's Church in Wagga Wagga and taught at Charles Sturt University. In 1995, he became Rector of St John's Church, Binda. From 1996 to 1997, Frame pursued a Master of Arts degree at the University of Kent in England.

Bishop of the Australian Defence Force

On June 28, 2001, Frame was consecrated as the fifth Anglican Bishop of the Australian Defence Force. He has served in this capacity since then.

Public Commentary and Advocacy

Bishop Frame is a frequent commentator on military history, church history, and social issues on Australian Broadcasting Corporation programs. He is also an author of over 20 books. Notable among them is "Binding Ties: an experience of adoption and reunion in Australia" (1999).

Post-Episcopal Career

In January 2007, Frame stepped down as Anglican Bishop of the Defence Forces and was appointed Director of St Mark's National Theological Centre in Barton, Canberra.
