Ludolf Bakhuizen was born on December 28, 1630, in Emden, East Friesland. He began his artistic career as a calligrapher before moving to Amsterdam in 1650. In Amsterdam, he studied under Allart van Everdingen and Hendrick Jacobsz Dubbels.
