Ludvig Alekseyevich Chibirov was a prominent South Ossetian politician who served as the first President of the Republic from 1996 to 2001.

Early Life and Education

Chibirov was born in 1938 and graduated with honors from the historical faculty of the North Ossetian State Pedagogical Institute in 1956. He pursued further education, earning a doctorate in historical sciences in 1978 and becoming a professor in 1981.

Academic Career

As an ethnologist, Chibirov made significant contributions to the study of Ossetian culture and history. He authored over 160 scholarly works, including "Ossetian Folk Housing," "Folk Agricultural Calendar of Ossetians," and "Meetings with Vaso Abaev." In 2003, he began work on the Universal Folklore-Ethnographic Encyclopedia of the Ossetian People, which he edited as the chief editor.

Political Career

In October 1993, Chibirov became the Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Republic of South Ossetia, leading the country during a tumultuous period in its history. In 1996, he signed a Memorandum with Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze, agreeing to cease hostilities and promote trust between the two sides. Chibirov was elected as the first President of South Ossetia in November 1996. However, he lost the 2001 presidential elections to Eduard Kokoity.
