Mikko Savola: A Political and Business Leader
Antti Mikko Heikki Tapani Savola is a Finnish politician and entrepreneur who has served as the Minister of Defense of Finland since 2023. He is a member of the Centre Party and has been a member of the Parliament of Finland since 2011.
Early Life and Education
Savola was born in 1981 and grew up in Ehtäri. He graduated from the Pirkanmaa University of Applied Sciences (now Tampere University of Applied Sciences) in 2005 with a degree in Economics of Commerce.
Political Career
Savola began his political career at a young age. In 2001, he was elected to the Ehtäri City Council. He served in the Education and Leisure Department from 2001 to 2004 and the City Administration from 2005 to 2009. He was also a member of the South Ostrobothnia Association of Municipalities from 2005 to 2012.
In 2009, Savola became the chairman of the Ehtäri City Council. He was appointed chairman of the South Ostrobothnia Hospital District the same year, a position he held until 2017. He has been a member of the Centre Party's Youth Organization since 2005 and served as its chairman in South Ostrobothnia from 2005 to 2008. He has also been the deputy chairman of the Centre Party in South Ostrobothnia since 2007.
Parliamentary Career
Savola first ran for parliament in 2007 but was not elected. He was elected as a member of the Parliament of Finland in the 2011 parliamentary elections, representing the Vaasa constituency. He has been re-elected in 2015 and 2019.
In parliament, Savola has served on various committees, including the Treasury Committee, the Labor and Equality Committee, the Defense Committee, the Rural and Forestry Committee, and the Foreign Affairs Committee. He has also been a member of the Finnish delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly since 2011 and its deputy chairman since 2019.
Minister of Defense
Savola was appointed Minister of Defense on January 5, 2023, temporarily replacing Antti Kaikkonen, who was on parental leave. He was relieved of his position on February 28, 2023.
Other Activities
Savola has been a sergeant major in the Finnish Defense Forces Reserve. He is also the chairman of the Union of Reservists, an organization that promotes defense preparedness in Finland. He has been a member of the advisory board of the Finnish Institute of International Affairs since 2019.
