Meral Akşener: A Force in Turkish Politics

Meral Akşener, an influential Turkish politician, has made a mark in the country's political landscape as a vocal opponent of Islamism and a staunch advocate for democratic ideals.

Early Life and Education

Born on July 8, 1956, in İzmit, Akşener holds a bachelor's degree in history from Istanbul University and a Ph.D. in history from Marmara University. Her academic career included teaching positions at Yıldız Technical University, Marmara University, and Kocaeli University.

Political Career

Akşener's political journey began in 1995 when she was elected to the Grand National Assembly (GNA) on behalf of the True Path Party. In 1996, she became Turkey's first female Minister of Interior, a position she held until June 1997. During this time, she played a pivotal role in addressing the Susurluk scandal.

After her stint as Minister of Interior, Akşener was re-elected to the GNA in 1999, 2007, and 2011, the latter two times as a member of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP). In 2017, following a failed bid for the MHP's leadership, she founded her own political party, named the Good Party.

Other Positions

In addition to her political endeavors, Akşener has served as the Vice President of the GNA from 2007 to 2015. She is married to Tuncer Akşener, a mechanical engineer, and has a son named Fatih Akşener.
