Biography of Louis Chevrolet
Louis Chevrolet, an American racing driver and automobile builder of Swiss descent, was born on December 25, 1878, and passed away on June 6, 1941. He lived in France and immigrated to the United States in 1900. Five years later, during his first car racing events, Louis defeated the greatest American racer of that time, Barney Oldfield, and broke his record.

The Birth of the Chevrolet Brand
In 1911, Louis Chevrolet gave his name to the first car built with the decisive participation of William Durant. Since then, the renowned name "Chevrolet" has forever become a part of automotive history and has essentially lived a separate life from its owner. Just four years later, Louis relinquished his rights to the Chevrolet brand to William Durant. Durant, in turn, merged Chevrolet Motor Company with General Motors in 1916, making it a division of the conglomerate.
A Diverse Career
Louis Chevrolet not only built racing cars but also designed other types of automobiles. He had a passion for motorboat racing and was involved in the construction of racing boats. For a period of time, Louis worked for Stutz Automobile Company, although not particularly successfully. He also attempted to build airplanes.
Final Years
In 1936, Chevrolet joined the Chevrolet division of General Motors, where he spent the remainder of his life working as a low-level employee. Despite his earlier achievements and contributions to the automotive industry, Louis Chevrolet ended his days as an ordinary worker in the Chevrolet division.
