Biography of Louis Van Hege

Louis Van Hege was a Belgian footballer and a member of the Belgian national team. He was born on May 8, 1889, in the commune of Uccle, located in the Brussels Capital Region.

Early Career

At the age of 11, Van Hege joined the club "Union Saint-Gilloise" where he played for the youth team for six years. In 1906, he made his debut for the senior team and quickly became an indispensable player for Union. He soon became one of the most popular footballers in Belgium.

Move to Milan

In 1910, Union embarked on a large European tour, playing against various teams. During this tour, Van Hege caught the attention of Milan, a club he played against in Italy. Despite not participating in the match, he joined Milan in November 1910 and quickly became a key player for the team.

Success at Milan

In his first season at Milan, Van Hege scored 19 goals in 16 matches, helping the team secure a second-place finish. He earned the nickname "Pale Shooter" due to his pale complexion and impressive dribbling skills and powerful and accurate shot.

During his time at Milan, Van Hege consistently showcased his goal-scoring ability, scoring a total of 98 goals in 91 matches. He became the captain of the team in the 1913-1914 season.

International Career

Van Hege represented the Belgian national team in 29 matches, scoring 11 goals. He was part of the team that won the gold medal at the 1920 Olympic Games, where he scored a crucial goal in the semifinal against the Netherlands.

His first match for Belgium was against France in 1919, and his last official match was against Sweden in May 1924 at the 1924 Olympics.

Other Endeavors

Aside from football, Van Hege also participated in bobsledding and competed in the 1932 Olympics, finishing in 9th place.

After retiring from his football career, Van Hege worked for Pirelli's representation in Belgium, a company involved in the production of automobile tires, whose owner was the president of Milan.

Louis Van Hege passed away on June 24, 1975, in his hometown of Uccle. He left a lasting legacy as one of Belgium's greatest footballers and a key figure in Milan's history.
