Luis de Morales was born in Badajoz around 1509. It is unknown where exactly he studied, but some believe he received his education in Valladolid or Toledo, possibly under the guidance of Berroguete. He was greatly influenced by the works of Italian masters, particularly Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci.
Artistic Style
Morales exclusively painted religious paintings, meticulously working on each piece with great care. His style was heavily influenced by the oldest Spanish icon painters, but he surpassed them in terms of strength, harmony, and pleasant color palette. His works are characterized by a deep, devout, and ecstatic mood, often depicting the grieving Virgin Mary and the suffering Savior.
