Biography of Robert J. Kuntz

Robert J. Kuntz is a game designer and author known for his work on role-playing games. He was born on September 23, 1955 in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Kuntz's older brother, Terry Kuntz, is also a game designer.

Early Life and Career

At the age of 13, while flipping through an issue of Playboy magazine, Kuntz discovered war games. In the Christmas gift section, he came across a game called "Dogfight" and became interested in tabletop and miniature games as well as correspondence games.

Kuntz joined TSR, Inc. as the sixth employee and held various positions including developer, editor, sales director, and author of articles for the magazine "Dragon." He also served as chairman of gaming conventions and was responsible for licensing the product line for Advanced Dungeons & Dragons by Judges Guild.

Contributions to Dungeons & Dragons

As a player of Dungeons & Dragons, Kuntz created the well-known character Robilar, who successfully completed the "Tomb of Horrors" campaign. Gary Gygax, the creator of Dungeons & Dragons, recognized Kuntz's exceptional gameplay and appointed him as the second Master in his "Greyhawk" campaign. As a friend of Gygax and the second Master, Kuntz had a significant influence on the development of the "Greyhawk" supplement. For example, Gygax included Kuntz's invented dark god Tharzduun, now known as Tharizdun, in the supplement. The character names "Tzunk" and "Bilarro" are anagrams of Gygax's and Kuntz's own character names. Kuntz also contributed to the development of two adventures published in the "Fate of Istus" supplement.
