King of the Khmer Empire

Reign: 1295-1308

Indravarman III emerged as the ruler of the Khmer Empire in 1295. He ascended to the throne through a treacherous plot involving his wife, who betrayed her previous husband, Jayavarman VIII.

Zhou Daguan's Embassy (1296-1297)

During Indravarman's reign, a delegation of envoys led by Zhou Daguan, a representative of Khan Kublai, arrived in the Khmer Empire. This embassy provided valuable insights into the empire's culture and customs through the writings of Zhou Daguan.

Rise of Buddhism

Buddhism gained prominence during Indravarman's rule. The first inscription documenting his reign, dated 1309 two years after his abdication, was written in Pali, indicating the strengthening influence of Buddhism as the dominant faith.

Abdication and Legacy

In 1308, Indravarman III abdicated in favor of his relative, Srindrajayavarman. His legacy as ruler remains a subject of historical inquiry, with further research needed to fully understand his contributions to the Khmer Empire.
