Early Life and Education
Áslaug Arna Sigurbjörnsdóttir was born on November 30, 1990, in Reykjavík, Iceland, to Kristin Steinarssdóttir (1959-2012) and Sigurbjörn Magnússon. She has a brother and a sister. Sigurbjörnsdóttir graduated from the University of Iceland in 2015 with a Bachelor's degree in law. In 2017, she obtained a Master's degree in law from the same university.
Political Career
Sigurbjörnsdóttir has been a member of the Independence Party since her youth. She served as chairwoman of the party's youth movement in Reykjavík from 2011 to 2013. In 2016, she ran for secretary of the party and was elected with 91.9% of the vote.
In the 2016 snap parliamentary elections, Sigurbjörnsdóttir was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Reykjavík North constituency, becoming the youngest MP elected in that election. She was re-elected in the 2017 elections.
Parliamentary Roles
During her time in parliament, Sigurbjörnsdóttir served as chairwoman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs from 2017 to 2019. She also headed the Icelandic delegation to the Inter-Parliamentary Union during this period.
Minister of Justice
On September 6, 2019, Sigurbjörnsdóttir was appointed as Minister of Justice in Katrín Jakobsdóttir's cabinet. She succeeded Þórdís Kolbrún R. Gylfadóttir, who had been serving as acting Minister of Justice following the resignation of Sigríður Á. Andersen.
Personal Life
Sigurbjörnsdóttir's mother, Kristin Steinarssdóttir, was a teacher who passed away in 2012. Her father, Sigurbjörn Magnússon, is a Supreme Court prosecutor.
