Early Life and Football CareerLyle Martin Alzado was born on April 3, 1949, in Brooklyn, New York. He was a professional American football player who gained fame not only as a great athlete but also as one of the first to start using steroids. Alzado's father was Italian, and his mother was Jewish. In 1959, their family moved to Long Island. During his school years, Alzado was one of the leading football players. He occasionally won youth championships, and even then, people started predicting a brilliant football future for him.
While attending college, Alzado caught the attention of the Denver Broncos' club coach, who saw great potential in him. In 1971, Lyle Alzado officially joined the Denver Broncos and remained with the team until 1978. In 1979, he joined the Cleveland Browns. The next milestone in his football career was his outstanding game for the Los Angeles Raiders. From 1982 to 1985, Alzado held the position of the team's leading defender. He was known for being a strong and fierce player, and many footballers feared facing him.
Steroid Abuse and Health Issues
Lyle Alzado gained notoriety not only for his football skills but also as an athlete who was among the first to use steroids. His doctors discovered a serious illness that significantly affected the development of his career. He had a brain tumor, which he actively fought against during the last years of his life. Lyle Alzado passed away on March 14, 1992. The cause of death was attributed to steroid abuse. Information from multiple sources indicated that the athlete had been using substances derived from natural growth hormones rather than synthetic ones. Shortly before his death, he confessed to "Sports Illustrated" that he was facing premature death due to steroids.
Alzado had been using anabolic steroids since 1969. He had no sense of moderation and wanted to achieve the maximum result from their effects. Lyle Alzado was buried at the River View Cemetery in Portland. Besides sports, he had a passion for cinema. He can be seen in small roles in films such as "Who Is Harry Kellerman?", "Mike Hammer: Murder Takes All," "Brothers-in-Arms," and "Neon City." In 1989, he had a notable role in the popular TV series "The Super Mario Bros." In 1992, the athlete appeared in his last film, playing the character of Balka in "Neon City."
