Post-war, the Dunham family moved to Mercer Island, Washington, where Madeleine's strong work ethic led her to become one of the first female vice presidents at a bank in Hawaii.

When Obama's mother, Anne Dunham, met his father, Barack Obama Sr., while attending the University of Hawaii, Madeleine's disapproval echoed that of Obama Sr.'s parents.
