Magnus Carlsson: A Swedish Musical Icon
Early Life and EducationBorn on June 24, 1974, in Borås, Sweden, Magnus Carlsson grew up in Fristad, where he attended a specialized school with an emphasis on music. He went on to study musical pedagogy at the University of Gothenburg for four years, earning a degree as a music and vocal teacher.
Musical Beginnings with Barbados
Carlsson's singing career began in 1994 when he joined the Swedish band Barbados. As a member of Barbados, he twice placed second in the Swedish Melodifestivalen, in 2000 with "Se Mig" and in 2001 with "Allt Som Jag Ser." In 2002, Barbados finished fourth with the song "Världen Utanför."
Joining Alcazar
Towards the end of 2002, Carlsson left Barbados and officially became a member of the popular pop group Alcazar on December 13, 2002. He performed his final concert with Barbados on January 24, 2003, passing the torch to "Fame Factory" graduate Mattias Holmgren.
With Alcazar, Carlsson achieved two third-place finishes at Melodifestivalen: in 2003 with "Not A Sinner, Nor A Saint" (while Barbados finished tenth) and in 2005 with "Alcastar." Both songs won the OGAE Second Chance Contest for songs that did not qualify for Eurovision. Alcazar released two albums with Carlsson as a member: "Alcazarized" in 2003 and "Dancefloor Deluxe" in 2004, which included the global hit song "This Is The World We Live In." Alcazar disbanded in 2005, and Carlsson embarked on a solo career.
Solo Career and Return to Melodifestivalen
Carlsson made his solo Melodifestivalen debut in 2006 with the song "Lev Livet." Despite finishing eighth out of ten in the final, the song topped the Swedish charts. He returned to the competition in 2007 with "Live Forever," which reached the semi-finals.
After releasing several solo albums, Carlsson made a highly anticipated return to Melodifestivalen in 2015 with "Möt Mig i Gamla Stan" (Meet Me in the Old Town). He reached the final after finishing in first or second place in the semi-finals.
Personal Life
Magnus Carlsson is openly gay and married to Mats Carlsson. One of his former partners was Alcazar vocalist Andreas Lundstedt.
