Early Life and Education

Ali Aliyevich Dakhadaev was born in 1882 in the village of Untsukul, Dagestan, into a blacksmith's family. From 1900, he studied at the St. Petersburg Institute of Railway Engineers, actively participating in the student movement of 1901-02.

Revolutionary Beginnings

In 1905, Dakhadaev returned to Dagestan and became a prominent leader of the Temir-Khan-Shura organization of the Russian Social Democratic Labor Party (RSDLP). Facing arrests and exile in 1906, he resumed his engineering studies, graduating in 1910 and working on the Maikopskaya railway until 1916.

Role in the Revolution

After the February Revolution of 1917, Dakhadaev co-founded and led the left wing of the Dagestan Socialist Group. He served as a member of the Dagestan Oblast Soviet in Temir-Khan-Shura (now Buynaksk). In early 1918, he organized Red Guard detachments to counter armed groups led by the Muslim clergy and highland feudal lords.

Military Leadership

From May 1918, Dakhadaev became a member of the Oblast Military Revolutionary Council (VRK) and later Commissar of the Oblast Military Commissariat. Together with U. Buynaksky, he established and commanded the Dagestan Red Army, successfully defending against German-Turkish forces and Colonel L.F. Bicherakhov's troops. Dakhadaev was elected to the first Soviet Dagestan Oblast Executive Committee and served on the Dagestan Extraordinary War Council.

Tragic End

On September 9, 1918, Dakhadaev was captured by White Guards and executed in Upper Dzhengutai. In 1922, to honor his memory, the city of Port-Petrovsk was renamed Makhachkala.
