Education and Early Career

Ismail Sidqi Pasha received his education in pedagogy in the United Kingdom. Upon his return to Egypt, he began working for the Ministry of Education in 1909.

Political Roles

Sidqi's political career began in the 1920s when he held various administrative and ministerial posts. He served as the Minister of Communications in 1930, Minister of Interior in 1938, Minister of Education in 1939, and Minister of Finance in 1940.

Prime Minister of Egypt

In 1945, Sidqi became the Prime Minister of Egypt, a position he held until 1948. During his premiership, he led the negotiations with the United Kingdom to revise the terms of the Anglo-Egyptian Treaty of 1936. He also appealed to the United Nations in 1947 to resolve the Egyptian question.

Suppression of Dissidence

Sidqi's premiership was marked by his efforts to suppress the liberation and democratic movements in Egypt. He took a hardline stance against opposition groups, including the "Muslim Brotherhood."

Growing Concerns

In 1948, Sidqi became increasingly concerned about the growing popularity of the Muslim Brotherhood. Rumors of a coup d'état began to circulate. In December of that year, he banned the movement, which ultimately led to his assassination.

Legacy

Ismail Sidqi Pasha's political career was controversial. He is remembered for his negotiations with the United Kingdom, his suppression of dissent, and his ultimately tragic fate.
