Early Life and Education

Makoto Kobayashi, a renowned Japanese physicist, was born in Nagoya, Japan. He earned his doctorate from Nagoya University in March 1972.

Academic and Research Career

In 1972, Kobayashi joined Kyushu University, where he made significant contributions to the field of particle physics. In 1979, he moved to the National Laboratory of High Energy Physics.

Nobel Prize-winning Discovery

Kobayashi's pivotal work centered around the hypothesis of the existence of a third generation of quarks. This hypothesis, proposed in 1973, predicted the existence of the b-quark. Four years later, the b-quark's discovery experimentally confirmed Kobayashi's theory.

Later Career and Honors

From 2003 to 2006, Kobayashi served as the Director of the Institute of Particle and Nuclear Studies at KEK, the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization in Tsukuba. He also held the position of Professor Emeritus at KEK.

Throughout his career, Kobayashi received numerous accolades, including the Sakurai Prize (1985), the Order of Culture (2008), and the Nobel Prize in Physics (2008).

Personal Life

Makoto Kobayashi married Sachiko Enomoto in 1975, and they had a son, Junichiro, in 1977. After his wife's passing, Kobayashi remarried Emiko Nakayama in 1990. They have a daughter named Yuko.
