Maxim Afinogenov: Russian Ice Hockey Legend
Early Life and CareerMaxim Afinogenov was born in Moscow, Russia, on December 4, 1979. He began his ice hockey career in the Moscow Dynamo youth system under coach Viktor Shkurdyuk. Afinogenov played for Moscow Dynamo from 1996 to 1999, recording 103 appearances, 24 goals, and 23 assists.
NHL Debut and International Success
In November 1999, Afinogenov made his NHL debut for the Buffalo Sabres against the Boston Bruins. He scored his first NHL goal and assisted on another in the same game. Afinogenov represented Russia at three Olympic Games (2002, 2006, 2010) and eight world championships, winning gold in 2008. He earned a bronze medal at the 2002 Olympics and the 2005 world championship.
Return to Russia and Later Career
After briefly returning to Russia for the 2004-05 NHL lockout, Afinogenov rejoined Moscow Dynamo and became Russian champion. In 2010, he returned to Russia permanently and signed with SKA Saint Petersburg in the KHL. After two seasons with SKA, Afinogenov signed with Vityaz in 2013, where he played for five seasons.
In November 2016, Afinogenov reached a historic milestone by playing his 500th game in the Russian championship. He made his return to Moscow Dynamo in 2018 and scored his first KHL hat-trick at the age of 39. Afinogenov continued to excel in his 40s, scoring two goals against Lokomotiv in 2019. He retired in 2020 after his contract with Moscow Dynamo expired.
Personal Life
Maxim Afinogenov married Russian tennis player Elena Dementieva in 2011. They had a daughter, Veronika, in 2014. Afinogenov's younger sister, Ekaterina, is married to American ice hockey player Max Pacioretty.
