Early Life and Career

Mary Ellen "Mala" Powers was born on December 20, 1931, in San Francisco, California. Her family moved to Los Angeles when she was a child. Inspired by a youth theater workshop, Powers pursued acting lessons and made her film debut in William Nigh's "Tough As They Come" (1942). She began working in radio dramas at age sixteen and transitioned to film in 1950 with roles in "Edge of Doom" and "Outrage."

Rise to Prominence

Powers' career soared when she signed with producer Stanley Kramer and starred alongside José Ferrer in Michael Gordon's "Cyrano de Bergerac" (1950). Her performance as Roxane earned her a Golden Globe nomination. However, her USO tour in Korea in 1951 led to a life-threatening illness and a nine-month recovery.

Continued Success in Film and Television

After her recovery, Powers appeared in numerous low-budget westerns and science fiction films. She also had a notable role in Joseph Pevney's musical "Tammy and the Bachelor" (1957). Powers graced the small screen in over 100 television series, including "Maverick," "Bonanza," and "The Wild Wild West." She starred alongside Anthony Quinn in the television movie "The Man in the City."

Powers married Monte Vanton in 1954, and they had one son, Toran Vanton. She later married book publisher M. Hughes Miller in 1970. During her time with Miller, Powers became an accomplished children's author.
