Biography of Mark Bohan

Mark Bohan, a French fashion designer, was born on September 30, 1926. He began his professional career in the fashion industry after obtaining a diploma in art and philosophy from Lakanal High School in Paris.

Inspired by his mother, who worked as a milliner, Bohan developed a passion for design at a young age. He gained practical experience by working for various renowned fashion houses such as Piguet, Edward Molyneux, and Jean Patou between 1945 and 1958. He also worked as a freelance designer for the New York fashion company, Madeleine de Rauch.

In 1958, Bohan joined the prestigious fashion house, Dior. He quickly rose through the ranks and became the head of the company's English operations in London. However, in 1960, when Yves St. Laurent left Dior to serve in the military, Bohan was summoned to Paris and appointed as the lead designer. Some of the founders of the company believed that St. Laurent had strayed too far from the original style of the house, and Bohan was tasked with bringing the design department back to its more traditional roots.

In 1961, Bohan presented a collection of slim, silhouette dresses consisting of long, lightweight corsets and narrow skirts. The collection was well-received, but his true breakthrough came in 1966 with his collection inspired by the movie "Doctor Zhivago." The collection featured long, fluffy coats, twisted dresses, turtlenecks, and high boots, and it received applause from fashion enthusiasts worldwide.

After nearly 30 years of impeccable service, Bohan left Dior in 1989. He then assumed the position of fashion director at Norman Hartnell in 1990, where he seamlessly integrated his complex and unconventional designs into the stylistic heritage of the historic couture house.

Bohan's tenure at Norman Hartnell was short-lived, as he left in 1992 to focus on designing under his own name. From the early days of his career at Dior, he gained a reputation as a creator who could elevate popular, everyday fashion into high fashion couture, imbuing garments with ethereal elegance while maintaining their youthful spirit.

In addition to his notable collections from 1961 and 1966, Bohan's unconventional evening gowns, such as suits with bow ties on the back, were also highly regarded.
