Marcus Oliver Johnston Mumford was born in 1987 in Yorba Linda, California. His parents, both British, moved to England when Marcus was just six months old. He grew up in Wimbledon and attended King's College School. It was at this school that he met Ben Lovett, with whom he later formed the band Mumford & Sons.

After completing a year at the University of Edinburgh, Marcus returned to London to pursue a career as a musician. He collaborated with other artists, including Laura Marling, before forming his own band in 2007.
