Biography of Dr. Margaret Chan
Dr. Margaret Chan, the Director-General of the Department of Health, hails from the People's Republic of China. She obtained her medical degree from the University of Western Ontario, Canada. In 1978, she began her career in the Hong Kong Department of Health.
Minister of Health in Hong Kong
In 1994, Dr. Chan was appointed as the Minister of Health in Hong Kong. During her nine-year tenure, she implemented various initiatives to prevent the spread of diseases and improve public health. Dr. Chan introduced new measures to enhance infectious disease surveillance, response capabilities, and strengthen the training of public health professionals. She also fostered closer collaborations at the local and international levels. Dr. Chan successfully led efforts to combat outbreaks of avian influenza and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).
World Health Organization (WHO)
In 2003, Dr. Chan began her work with the World Health Organization (WHO) as the Director of the Department for Protection of the Human Environment. In June 2005, she was appointed as the Director of the Department of Communicable Diseases Surveillance and Response and the Representative of the Director-General for Pandemic Influenza. In September 2005, she assumed the role of Assistant Director-General for Cluster Diseases.
Director-General of WHO
On November 9, 2006, Dr. Chan was appointed as the Director-General of the World Health Organization. Her term of office was set to expire in June 2012.
