Education and Early Political Career

Margrethe Vestager is a Danish politician who graduated in Economics from the University of Copenhagen in 1993. At the age of 21, she joined the central committee of the Social Liberal party "Radikale Venstre" and became a member of the European Affairs Committee.

Political Leadership

Upon completing her education, Vestager became the party's chairperson and subsequently served as Minister of Education and Ecclesiastical Affairs for Denmark in 1998. She has been a member of the Parliament (Folketing) since November 20, 2001. On June 15, 2007, she was elected chairman of her party's parliamentary group, succeeding Marianne Jelved.

Government Service

On October 3, 2011, Vestager became Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Economic and Interior Affairs in the government of Helle Thorning-Schmidt. From November 1, 2014, she served as European Commissioner for Competition in the European Commission of Jean-Claude Juncker.

Family

Vestager's husband, Thomas Jensen, teaches mathematics at a gymnasium. The couple has three daughters.

Cultural Influence

The political career of Margrethe Vestager has inspired European screenwriters to create the television series "Government" for Danish television.
