Penina Tamano-Shata
Penina Tamano-Shata is an Israeli politician, lawyer, and journalist who holds the distinction of being the first Ethiopian-born woman to serve as a Knesset member and a government minister in Israel.
Early Life and Education
Born on November 1, 1981, in Wozage, Ethiopia, Tamano-Shata immigrated to Israel with her family when she was three years old. She pursued a law degree at Ono Academic College, where she became the Vice Chairperson of the National Ethiopian Students Association. She actively participated in student protests against discrimination faced by Ethiopian Jews.
Career in Journalism and Activism
From 2007 to 2012, Tamano-Shata worked as a reporter for Channel One. Prior to the 2013 elections, she joined the Yesh Atid party.
Political Career
In the 2013 parliamentary elections, Tamano-Shata ran on the Yesh Atid list at number 14 and became a member of the Knesset. During the 2015 parliamentary elections, she was placed at number 13 but failed to secure enough votes to re-enter the Knesset. In 2018, she replaced Yaakov Peri in the Knesset.
On March 29, 2020, Tamano-Shata left Yesh Atid to remain in Blue and White, and on May 15, she was appointed as Minister for Immigration and Integration in the national unity government of Benjamin Netanyahu and Benny Gantz.
