Saint Maria Du Tian

Early Life and Persecution

Saint Maria Du Tian was a devout Catholic who lived in China during a tumultuous period of persecution. In 1899, the Boxer Rebellion erupted, targeting Christian communities. Maria, along with her two sons and two daughters, sought refuge in a hidden shelter near their village.

Martyrdom

On June 29, 1900, their haven was discovered by Boxer rebels. They demanded that Maria and her children renounce their Christian faith, but she remained steadfast in her beliefs. As a result, she was brutally murdered.

Veneration

On April 17, 1955, Maria Du Tian was beatified by Pope Pius XII, along with her daughter, Magdalene Du Fengju. On October 1, 2000, she was canonized by Pope John Paul II, along with 120 other Chinese martyrs.

Legacy

Maria Du Tian's unwavering faith in the face of adversity has made her an enduring symbol of courage and resilience. She is a beloved saint in the Catholic Church, whose feast day is celebrated on July 9th. Her martyrdom continues to inspire and strengthen Catholics around the world.
