Persecution in China
During the second half of the 19th century, China experienced intense anti-Christian sentiment, culminating in the Boxer Rebellion of 1899-1901. This uprising sparked widespread persecution of Christians across the country.
Maria's Martyrdom
On July 7, 1900, Maria Goretti was brutally murdered by Boxer rebels for refusing to renounce her Christian beliefs. She was killed along with her father and other family members.
Canonization and Sainthood
Maria Goretti's unwavering faith and sacrifice inspired the Catholic Church to honor her as a saint. She was beatified in 1955 by Pope Pius XII and canonized in 2000 by Pope John Paul II, along with a group of 120 other Chinese martyrs.
