Early Life and Training

Maria Petrova, born in 1975, began her rhythmic gymnastics career in Bulgaria at the tender age of 5. In 1990, she joined the renowned Levksi-Sofia club under the tutelage of legendary coach Neshka Robeva.

International Dominance

Petrova quickly rose to prominence, becoming a two-time world champion in the all-around in 1992 and 1994. She also claimed three additional medals at these championships, including a silver in 1991 as part of the national team. Her unparalleled success in 1993, 1994, and 1995 made her a three-time all-around world champion, a feat equaled only by fellow Bulgarian Margarita Gigovich. Additionally, she won 20 medals at world championships, including a record 8 golds.

Olympic Appearances

Despite her dominance in the world stage, Petrova placed fifth in the all-around at both the 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games. Notably, her fifth-place finish in Barcelona was due to an unfortunate mishap.

Achievements and Recognition

Petrova's remarkable achievements have earned her a place in the Guinness World Records. She is also a member of the Bulgarian Rhythmic Gymnastics Federation's Governing Council and the Chairman of the Judging Committee. Additionally, she serves on the Rhythmic Gymnastics Committee of the European Gymnastics Federation.

Personal Life and Legacy

Petrova married famous Bulgarian football goalkeeper Borislav Mihailov and had a daughter, Elinor. After retiring from competition, she graduated from the Sports Academy and continued to contribute to the sport as a coach and administrator.
