Early Life and Education
Born in Ukraine, this prominent cardinal entered the Lviv Higher Theological Seminary upon graduating from high school. Due to political circumstances, he relocated to Poland in 1950, where he was ordained a priest in Kalwaria Zebrzydowska.
Academic Pursuits
The future cardinal pursued his studies at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, earning a doctorate in theology. He also obtained a doctorate in philosophy from the Catholic University of Lublin and habilitated in the philosophy of religion at the Warsaw Theological Academy.
Church Service
From 1952, he served as a parish vicar in Bachnia and Poronin. In 1970, he became Secretary of the Scientific Council of the Episcopate of Poland and later Dean of the Pontifical Theological Faculty in Krakow (1976-1981). He was subsequently appointed Rector of the Pontifical Theological Academy in Krakow (1981-1987).
Episcopal Ministry
On May 21, 1984, he was consecrated as Titular Bishop of Lambesi and Apostolic Administrator of Lviv for the territories in Poland. In 1984, he was appointed Archbishop Metropolitan of Lviv of the Latin rite and became the Chairman of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of Ukraine in 1992.
Cardinalate
In 1998, the cardinal was elevated in pectore to the rank of Cardinal-Priest with the title of S. Sisto. His elevation was made public in 2001, with his create as Cardinal.
