Marianne Thieme: Championing Animal Rights

Early Life and Education

Marianne Thieme, a prominent Dutch politician, was raised in Dorwert, the Netherlands. With a passion for justice, she pursued a legal education at Sorbonne University and Erasmus University Rotterdam, specializing in administrative law. During her university years, she embraced vegetarianism, igniting her activism for animal rights.

Activism and Advocacy

In 1998, Thieme joined the B&A Group, a research agency. Her commitment to animal welfare led her to work for the Dutch anti-fur animal welfare foundation and the Wacker Dier Fund, which opposed the exploitation of animals in intensive farming.

Founding the Party for the Animals

In 2002, Thieme played a pivotal role in establishing the Party for the Animals, a political movement dedicated to protecting animal rights. The party's inaugural general elections in 2003 garnered 50,000 votes, but proved insufficient for representation in parliament.

Election Success and Political Career

In 2004, Thieme was elected as the party's lead candidate for the European Parliament elections, resulting in a significant increase in votes to 153,000 (3.2%). Two years later, in the 2006 parliamentary elections, the Party for the Animals made history by securing two seats in the Dutch parliament. Thieme became the first animal rights advocate to occupy a legislative position worldwide.

Signature Statement and Beliefs

Renowned for her unwavering dedication to animal welfare, Thieme perpetually concludes her parliamentary speeches with the phrase, "Furthermore, we believe that animal farms must be closed," echoing Cato the Elder's famous "Carthago delenda est."

Personal Life

In 2006, Thieme converted to Seventh-day Adventism. She is the mother of two daughters.
