Early Life and Military Career
Louis-Philippe de Ségur was born in Paris, France, on February 10, 1753, into an aristocratic family. He joined the elite French Guards regiment, where he served with distinction in the military campaigns of 1764-1768.
Diplomatic Service
In 1773, Ségur embarked on his diplomatic career as an advisor at the embassy in Kassel, Germany. Two years later, in 1775, he was appointed as secretary to the French ambassador to Russia, Marquis de Jumilhac, at the court of Catherine II the Great.
Secretary and Chargé d'Affaires
From 1775 to 1780, Ségur served as secretary to the French embassy in St. Petersburg. In November 1777, he was promoted to chargé d'affaires, managing the embassy in the absence of the ambassador.
Published Diary
Ségur's diary, published in 1901, provides a valuable account of Russian court life and politics during the reign of Catherine II. Covering the period from January 1775 to October 1780, the diary offers firsthand insights into the Empress's character, the intrigues at court, and the diplomatic challenges of the time.
