William J. Burns
Early Life and EducationWilliam Joseph Burns was born on April 4, 1956, in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. His father was a U.S. Army Major General. Burns earned his Bachelor's degree in history from La Salle University in 1978. As a Marshall Scholar, he pursued graduate studies at Oxford, receiving his Master's and Doctorate in international relations in 1981. La Salle University has also awarded him an honorary Doctor of Laws degree.
Diplomatic Career
Burns began his diplomatic career in 1982. Key positions he has held include:
- Ambassador to Russia (2005-2008)
- Ambassador to Jordan (1998-2001)- Deputy Secretary of State (2011-2014)
- Acting Secretary of State (January 2009)
