Early Life and Education
Marilisa Xenogiannakopoulou was born on February 20, 1963, in Athens, Greece. She graduated from the Law School of the University of Athens in 1985. In 1986, she obtained a DEA diploma in Public Law from the University of Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne.
Political Career
Involvement in Youth and Socialist MovementsFrom a young age, Xenogiannakopoulou was active in the student movement, participating in the Panhellenic Student Union (PASP) and the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK). She held several positions, including member of the International Relations Department of the PASOK Youth Committee (1983-1985) and member of the Board of the Law Students Association (1982-1983).
Member of the European Parliament and Greek Parliament
Xenogiannakopoulou worked in European institutions in Brussels for several years before entering politics. She was elected as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) in 2004, serving until 2007 when she was elected to the Greek Parliament. She was re-elected to the Greek Parliament in 2009.
Ministerial Positions
Xenogiannakopoulou held several ministerial positions under the PASOK government. She served as Minister of Health and Social Solidarity from 2009 to 2010, and as First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for European Affairs from 2010 to 2012.
Resignation from PASOK
In 2012, Xenogiannakopoulou resigned from her ministerial position and from PASOK in protest against the government's austerity measures. She voted against the austerity bill, which passed with the support of the ruling coalition and the main opposition party.
Alliance with SYRIZA
Minister of Administrative ReformIn 2018, Xenogiannakopoulou joined the leftist party SYRIZA. She was appointed Minister of Administrative Reform under the leadership of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras. She held this position until the end of the government's term in 2019.
Member of Parliament (2019-Present)
In the 2019 parliamentary elections, Xenogiannakopoulou was elected as an MP for SYRIZA. She currently represents the electoral district of Athens B1 in the Greek Parliament.
