Musician, Scholar, and Educator
Maria Romanivna Cherkashina-Gubarenko was a renowned Soviet and Ukrainian musicologist, music critic, педагоg, and librettist. Born into a family of dramatic actors, she inherited a passion for the performing arts.
Academic Achievements
Cherkashina-Gubarenko's education began at the Kharkiv Conservatory in 1962, where she studied under Galina Tyumeneva. She went on to pursue postgraduate studies at the Moscow Conservatory under Boris Yarustovsky, completing her studies in 1970. In 1972, she earned her Candidate of Arts degree with a dissertation titled "Contemporary Musical-Psychological Drama: Some Trends in the Development of the Genre."
Her doctoral dissertation, defended in 1985, focused on "Historical Opera of the First Half of the 19th Century: Problems of Historical Interpretation and the Fate of the Genre." This significant work earned her the prestigious Doctor of Arts degree.
Teaching and Research
Cherkashina-Gubarenko's teaching career spanned over three decades. From 1962 to 1985, she taught at the Kharkiv Conservatory (later renamed the Kharkiv Institute of Arts named after I.P. Kotlyarevsky). She served as an associate professor from 1973 and as head of the Music History Department from 1979 to 1985.
In 1985, she joined the faculty of the Kyiv Conservatory (later renamed the National Music Academy of Ukraine), where she remained until her retirement. As head of the Music History Department (1985-1999) and the History of Foreign Music Department (1999-retirement), she guided the research and academic achievements of numerous aspiring musicians.

Cherkashina-Gubarenko was an active member of the Union of Composers of the USSR and the Union of Composers of Ukraine. She was also a corresponding member of the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine.
