Marina Weisband: German-Jewish Politician and Activist
Marina Weisband is a German-Jewish politician and activist who served as political director of the Pirate Party of Germany from May 2011 to April 2012.
Early Life and Education
Weisband was born in Kiev, Ukraine, in 1987 to Oksana Weisband (née Onufrienko) and Igor Weisband. Her grandfather, David Weisband, served as a high-ranking staff officer in the Red Army during World War II. In 1994, her family immigrated to Wuppertal, Germany, under a program for Jewish immigrants. After graduating from high school in 2006, she studied psychology at the University of Münster.
Political Career
Weisband joined the Pirate Party of Germany in 2009. Her ideas and charisma quickly gained recognition, both in Münster and in Berlin. In May 2011, at the party's national convention, she was elected as one of seven co-chairs with 67% of the delegate votes. She was responsible for political strategy and did not have to relocate to Berlin, as the party operated largely online. After the Pirate Party won its first seats in the Berlin state elections in September 2011, Weisband became more widely known to the public.
In April 2012, after an attempt to expel a Holocaust denier from the party failed, Weisband called on members to combat anti-Semitism and right-wing extremism within its ranks. She announced that she would not seek re-election the following month, citing a need to focus on her education, but did not rule out a return to politics after completing university.
Weisband was one of the Pirate Party's most prominent figures, known for her approachable style that appealed to younger voters. She left the party in 2016 to pursue a project called Aula, which aimed to promote student self-government in schools. In 2018, she joined the Alliance 90/The Greens party and became an advisor on digital policy.
Personal Life
Weisband married Marcus Rosenfeld in 2013, and they had a daughter in 2016. She identifies as a practicing Jew and retains her Ukrainian citizenship.
